Y by YOSHIKI

Founded in 2008, “Y by Yoshiki” is the collaboration of Japanese artist Yoshiki Hayashi and Napa Valley winemaker and 4th generation vintner, Rob Mondavi Jr.

The wines are sourced from premium vineyards across California and express the artistry, quality and creativity of this unique partnership.

ABOUT Y

“Y by Yoshiki “ wines are created by Yoshiki, composer, classically trained pianist, rock drummer and leader of Japanese rock group “X Japan”. The Y by Yoshiki California 2017 line of wines will be released in August 2019.

Y by Yoshiki wine is created in collaboration with Rob Mondavi Jr., 4th generation Napa Valley winemaker and grandson of Robert Mondavi.
As a wine lover and California resident, Yoshiki has truly respected the Mondavi family and their long commitment to producing world class wines for many generations. From this respect, the “Y by Yoshiki” collaboration was born.

In February 2009, Yoshiki met with Michael Mondavi and his son, Rob Mondavi Jr. They invited Yoshiki to their Napa Valley home to have dinner and to discuss their new collaboration wine project. They tasted many wines together that evening in order to get a sense of the wines that Yoshiki loves and enjoys. The next day, Yoshiki and winemaker Rob Mondavi Jr. visited the Michael Mondavi Family Estate where they tasted and blended many different wines from the different barrels of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon in order to blend the perfect wines for Yoshiki. The first two wines of their new collaboration, -- Y by Yoshiki California Chardonnay 2008 and the Y by Yoshiki California Cabernet Sauvignon were released in Autumn 2009 exclusively in Japan.

In the fall of 2016, Yoshiki released his "Napa series" of wines -- the Y by Yoshiki Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 and Y by Yoshiki Napa Valley Chardonnay 2012. The grapes for these luxury wines were sourced exclusively from selected vineyards in the Napa Valley. The reputation for these wines continued to grow and after several Yoshiki television appearances featuring the wines, Y by Yoshiki Napa wines became instantly famous and quickly sold out. Since then, Y by Yoshiki wines have become more and more difficult to obtain.

Yoshiki decided to create a new blend of “smart casual wine” so that the average consumers could enjoy his California wines. Yoshiki and Rob went back to work and in July 2018, they released their "California series" of wines -- Y by Yoshiki California Chardonnay 2017 and Y by Yoshiki California Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 were released but within 6 months, the wines were sold out.

Later, at the end of 2018, in celebration of his 10 year partnership with Rob Mondavi Jr., Yoshiki released his "masterpiece", the 10th Anniversary Special Edition Y by Yoshiki Oakville Napa Valley 2016. This year, in the summer of 2019, Yoshiki will launch the newest releases of his "California series", the Y by Yoshiki "Encore" California Chardonnay 2017 and the Y by Yoshiki California Cabernet Sauvignon 2017.

The Growing Season

A welcome end to four years of drought brought with it a consistent and healthy bud break for the 2017 vintage in mid-March. Light rains throughout April kept away any risk of frost before the warmth of May brought the vineyards to life. Ample water from a wet winter complemented a sun-filled spring with no major heat spikes, resulting in vigorous vine growth and canopy development to protect optimal bloom and fruit set. Th e heat of summer also benefitted from the recharged aquifers, acting as a buffer to maintain healthy soil moisture levels through a series of hot days. The 2017 harvest began in August under optimal conditions providing abundant, well-balanced fruit with tremendous character.

The Winemaking Process

After the grapes were hand-harvested, de-stemmed and crushed, the juice was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Extended post-fermentation maceration harmoniously married flavors and tannins, giving this Cabernet Sauvignon its lovely, seamless texture. Malolactic fermentation, combined with 12 months oak aging (45% new French oak).

The Wine

Deep crimson in color, the the wine showcases bold and dark fruit aromas of blackberry, ripe plum and cassis with a hint of oak and spice. On the palate these deep fruit characters are accented by cedar and tobacco nuances with hints of dark chocolate, all supported by layers of silky fine tannins.

The Winemaking Process

After night harvest, we gently whole-cluster press our Chardonnay grapes and put the free run juice in new French oak to undergo 100% oak fermentation. Here we depart from convention by performing a simultaneous primary and malolactic fermentation which helps to preserve the delicate floral aromas, producing a fresh and clean expression of Chardonnay. Post fermentation, the wine spends nine months sur-lie aging in French oak, with stirring of the yeast lees adding layers of texture.

The Wine

Aromatics of green apple and pineapple accented with toasty brown sugar, Yoshiki’s 2017 blend demonstrates a unique balance of firm acidity; authentic fruit; and a wonderful texture from the oak

MESSAGE

“When I compose a song, I write the score on a piece of paper, rarely do I use a musical instrument. I can hear everything in my head. It’s almost always complete. Wine to me is a song. My imagination flows with every sip and my mind is set free.Together with Rob Mondavi, Jr., Y was created out of my passion for wine and music.

YOSHIKI

Yoshiki is a very unconventional artist and musician who broke the norms of the Japanese music world. He is a man of overwhelming presence on stage yet is so soft-spoken off stage. He is a classical pianist as well as a rock band drummer. He’s a “creative chameleon” who can change his personality to adapt to any situation. Because of this, Yoshiki has very unique perspective. While he respects traditional values, he also challenges the limits to create original, new, and fresh ideas. In this sense, Yoshiki and I are both artists, sharing the same perspective when we make wines together.

Tasting Comment

Our grapes, selected from Oakville, one of Napa Valley's most revered and honored vineyard areas, offer the stylistic importance that only the Oakville soils provide - layers of ripe flavors, deep richness, and smooth texture. This Cabernet features aromas of freshly cut cherries, French plum, dried herbs, and toasted oak coupled with fine leather, all providing beautiful aromatic harmony. On the palate, the wine maintains the regal theme with rich mahogany, red cherry, and cassis along with freshly ground cocoa nibs yielding to a smooth, meandering texture and resounding finish.

Rob Mondavi

“What strikes me most about the Yoshiki 2016 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon is the harmony between fruit, texture, and aromatics. The wine presents a true beginning, middle, and end, where each part is unique yet truly integrated with smooth body and opulence. This harmonious integration and smoothness in wine is of tremendous importance to Yoshiki - perhaps the result of being a musician, making harmony and balance, regardless of whether in music or in wine. I personally enjoy tasting with Yoshiki. He is a true aficionado and I appreciate how he looks at each individual aspect of the wine as a crucial note within a magical symphony.”

A comment from Yuko and Shin Kibayashi who are the authors of Kamino Shizuku “Drop of God”

This has the signature aroma of Oakville, synonymous to high quality vineyards, and such soft and silky tannins on the palate.
f the Y by Yoshiki California wines are called “smart casual” wines, this Y by Yoshiki Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon should be called a “black-tie” wine with a tenderness and approachability that reflects Yoshiki’s personality and philosophy. This wine is history in the making.

The Growing Season

Another year of drought conditions and a continued warm, dry winter season, resulted in an early bud break. Drought coupled with a cool Spring and long flowering period lead to uneven fruit set, smaller grape clusters and another year of lighter than usual crop. Temperatures throughout the growing season were a bit of a rollercoaster of hot and cold, forcing the fruit to ripen in waves. Despite the weather and light crop, we were able to harvest a crop offering beautiful rich character.

The Winemaking Process

After the grapes were gently hand-harvested, de-stemmed and crushed, the juice fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Extended post-fermentation maceration beautifully married flavors and tannins, giving the Cabernet Sauvignon its lovely, seamless texture. Malolactic fermentation in barrel, combined with 12 months oak aging (45% new French oak), further concentrated the wine’s vibrant red cherry, blackberry, and spice flavors, adding a hint of coffee and a lingering dark chocolate note on the finish.

The Wine

Deep crimson in color with intense dark cherry, berry and black fruit aromas. On the palate the dark fruit flavors are framed with nuances of coffee, chocolate, and hints of vanilla, framed by layers of silky, supple tannins.

The Growing Season

2017 marked the end of a five year drought as the season began with rainfall that refilled reservoirs and replenished soils. Harvest started early at a normal pace in many regions, and then progressed rapidly during a heat wave in late August and early September. Temperatures cooled mid-September, slowing the harvest pace. Many regions are reported reduced yields due to the heat spell, but overall vintners confident in the strong quality for the 2017 vintage.

The Winemaking Process

After night harvest, we gently whole-cluster press our Chardonnay grapes and put the free run juice in new French oak barrels to undergo 100% barrel fermentation. Here we depart from convention by performing a simultaneous primary and malolactic fermentation which helps to preserve the delicate floral aromas, producing a fresh and clean expression of Chardonnay. Post fermentation, the wine spends nine months sur-lie aging in French oak barrels, with stirring of the yeast lees adding layers of texture.

The Wine

Vibrant pale gold in color, with delicate aromas of pear, apple and stone fruit. On the palate, the mouth is medium bodied with layers of white peach, toasted nuts and fresh crème and honey. The wine finishes gracefully and invites you back for another glass.

The Growing Season

A wet winter kicked off the growing season in Napa, with rainfall extending through spring all the way into mid-June. The cool summer that followed led to a late harvest and one that required much patience in waiting for the grapes to fully ripen. That optimum point was finally reached several weeks later than normal. Patience paid off and shows in the ripe flavors of the high quality fruit brought in for the 2011 harvest.

The Growing Season

2012 was an outstanding vintage in Napa Valley. Spring was mild and bud break, flowering and fruit set were all very smooth. Summer and Fall brought warm temperatures, and the cool Napa evenings allowed the fruit to enjoy a long, slow ripening. Our Chardonnay was hand harvested in the cool night hours starting on October 4th and finishing on October 6th.
